Emergency Housing for Queer Black Mother and 2 Children
Hi, I am Lee, and I am sharing this story on behalf of my sibling L.A. L.A. is a queer Black mother who requires immediate assistance with housing, among other things.
I admit I have never done this before, but I acknowledge time is of the essence, and it would be helpful if anyone can provide support.
The need:
Please help us provide emergency relief for a queer Black mother and her two children, age 9 and 13, in Columbus, Ohio--who, due to the COVID-19 pandemic and a debilitating furlough experience, lost their housing and transportation.
In February 2020, L.A. was furloughed, disrupting her income and leaving her unhoused. She quickly found a women’s shelter, luckily within the same month, to meet her housing and food needs and remained there until December 2020. However, due to the rising concerns related to shelter overcrowding and COVID-19, and as a person living with an underlying health condition, moving to a safer area coupled with an administrative error resulted in her losing her spot.
In the meantime, she has been proactive in seeking hotel stay assistance. She is on housing waitlists, but COVID-19 has overwhelmed the capacity of shelters and systems, and she needs funds for lodging, food, and transportation while she searches for more stable housing for her family.
L.A. did receive some relief through the federal government’s $600 stimulus distribution. However, to date, that has been her only source of income. This is obviously not sustainable for anyone.
Our goal of $8000 would allow L.A. more time to find a place to live for her and her children, cover hotel stay costs, reduce barriers to access to other services, buy groceries, and pay for transportation.
We appreciate anything you can give in this time of crisis. Any amount contributes to safety and stability for this family. To maintain her privacy, we are not able to share personally-identifying information. We hope you will understand, and we sincerely appreciate your trust.
The funds would also help cover:
-Face masks
-Hand soaps for frequent hand washing
-Hand sanitizer
-Feminine hygiene products and other related products
-Phone cards, clothing, and additional needs
Also, if you are unable to donate, would you kindly share this post? Thanks in advance for your contribution during these difficult times.
