It's been over two years since Punta Mona closed. Many of the structures are weathered and falling apart, former living spaces and productive zones are completely overgrown, and of course there is no community of staff, volunteers, or guests to fill the space as there once was.
One of the only parts that has remained constant is the presence of the dedicated guardian and steward of the land, William Hidalgo- known to many of us as Wicho. Since Punta Mona’s closure, Wicho has been living and working daily to upkeep the space.
Unfortunately this past September, Wicho’s horse Foregón was bitten by a snake and died. Additionally this past month, his dog Capitán went missing and is not expected to return. Now without a Horse, dog, or any sort of community, Wicho is still at Punta Mona tasked with guarding the property, maintaining it, and living there full time.
Those who experienced Punta Mona during its operational days know the genuine kindness Wicho extends to all people and creatures who cross his path there in the Gandoca-Manzanillo reserve. From establishing trails and pathways throughout the land to taking in stranded passerbyers at his home for the night, Wicho served as a vital component of the community that we all shared. Always a friend to lean on, and a person who supports others in times of need, we are now reaching out to our community to help us support Wicho in return.
Your contribution will aid Wicho in purchasing a new horse, which will support him greatly despite the recent setbacks. We have set the goal higher than just the cost of a horse (~$1000) so that any additional funds can be given to Wicho to contribute to his work on his property and supporting his family. This is a call to action for our community to stand together and provide tangible support for a man that has supported many of us before.
Thank you for considering and contributing!
