A few days ago, my world was shaken when my best mate Wayne received the devastating news that he has cancer. It’s the kind of news that stops time—and suddenly, everything that once seemed important fades into the background.
Wayne isn’t just a mate—he’s one of life’s genuinely good people. He’s the kind of person who would drop everything to help someone else, who always puts others before himself without ever expecting anything in return. He’s the most selfless person I know—and now, for once, I want to do something for him.
Recently, Wayne was diagnosed with stage 4 bowel cancer. The original tumour has been successfully removed, but sadly, the cancer has spread to his liver. Right now, Wayne’s liver isn’t strong enough for the treatment he needs. Although that may change, at the moment he’s living month to month, not knowing how long he has. With treatment, doctors say he may have up to a year—but there are no guarantees.
Through it all, Wayne has remained focused not on himself, but on his family. His wife Julie, their five children Jade, Ellie, Paige, Tom and Alfie and his five beautiful grandchildren Woody, Harley, Betsy, Jonah and Roman who are his whole world. Every decision he makes, every moment he lives, is for them. Even now, his biggest worry isn’t himself, it’s how they’ll manage when he’s no longer here.
I’ve known Wayne for over 15 years, and he’s been an incredible friend through it all—loyal, kind, funny, and the type of person who makes life better just by being in it. My wife Michelle has known him even longer, and the truth is, it’s not just Wayne who means the world to us — it’s his whole family. Julie, the kids, the grandkids — they're not just friends, they’re part of our family. They always have been.
Wayne also has a wider family who care deeply for him—siblings, relatives, extended loved ones—each one feeling the weight of this situation, standing by him with strength and love. This fundraiser is for all of them too, because when someone like Wayne is hurting, it touches so many lives.
Wayne has also dedicated much of his life to helping others outside his own family. For many years, he has worked as a pastoral care worker in schools, supporting young people and families through some of their most difficult times. His work wasn’t just a job—it was something he cared about deeply, and it made a lasting impact on the lives of so many children and parents. More recently, Wayne was close to completing his Level 3 Counselling course, which would have made him a fully qualified counsellor. He was incredibly passionate about reaching that milestone so he could continue to support others in an even more meaningful way.
I’ve Set Up This Page to Help Give Wayne the Chance To:
✅ Tick off a few meaningful things from his bucket list, like:
- A peaceful forest day out with his family
- A short break away with Julie
- Seeing a live concert
- A short cruise—Wayne would love to see the Norwegian fjords or visit Amsterdam (and let’s be honest, the cruise option sounds even better to Wayne—because it means he doesn’t have to get on a plane! ️)
- More special family days out with the people he loves most
- And a few well-earned luxuries he’s always joked about—like finally getting a log burner in the lounge, or driving a Volvo just once in his life (don’t ask why—he just wants to!)
Ease the financial burden of what lies ahead:
- Including funeral costs
- Other end-of-life expenses
- So he can have peace of mind knowing everything is taken care of for those he loves most
It’s Our Turn to Show Up
Wayne has always been the one to show up for others.
Now it’s our turn to show up for him.
Every donation, no matter how big or small, will make a real difference.
And even if you can’t give, simply sharing this page far and wide would mean the world.
Thank You for reading, for caring, and for standing with Wayne and his family during this incredibly tough time.
