Meet Rochelle, my dear friend who left her home in Canada to volunteer for 6 months in Sri Lanka…and now it’s 10 years later. She married a Sri Lankan who cares deeply for his people and together they volunteer their time to help the suffering and abandoned. These are her words…

“For most, life here is a hard slog with no social safety net provided if you lose your job or get hurt or sick, and there is no general pension fund for the elderly. But now, with the government collapse, things have gotten much worse. There is no gas for vehicles or tuktuks or cooking, many food items are unavailable and prices have quadrupled in most cases…even for our basic staple of rice. Medicines are hard to get and the twice-daily power cuts and political unrest make it impossible for children to get to school. The government warns us that things will get even worse and to prepare for this.

Sri Lankans are kind and valiant people who somehow laugh at life’s inequities and shoulder on, but this breakdown in fiscal management of the country has caused an absolute collapse in their society. Years ago, we opened a small Food Pantry in our home in the Central Province (Kandy City) that was helping community members who came to us. But, the need has grown beyond our ability to handle. We are a simple couple sharing what we have with our neighbours. We are not an organization. However, we have a plan and my friend Jon is helping us to ask for your help. Our dream is to deliver Food Hampers to families (of any ethnicity) who struggle to have a daily meal. Local contacts inform us of those most vulnerable and of families with young or sick children.”
