The cover photo shows one woman - black, beautiful - and emotionally beaten.
She has obvious scars, like part of her finger missing from a partner that cut it off, and so many scars that you can’t see.
Like the countless moments in a single day where her partner tells her she’s not worthy - not worthy of communication, appreciation, or affection. Not worthy of response, eye contact, or support. Not worthy of what he perceives to be an almighty presence that is God’s gift to the earth.
Together, they have two children and Valentai has two children from previous relationships. Three of the children have learning disabilities and two have an Autism diagnosis.
Valentai relentlessly advocates for her four boys and attempts to shield them from the constant racist remarks that her partner spews at her - and publicly posts on his Facebook page to include posts about women resorting to selling their bodies in absence of a “man” providing for them; the worth of women being limited to sex; calling women, including Valentai “bimbos”; stating that there’s no use for women, or black people in politics or leadership, and so much more that goes beyond the scope of this explanation.
To Valentai, whom he calls “Olivia” because he refuses to use her first name, he says:
”I’m not taking fathering advice from a girl that grew up without one”.
“Black men don’t take care of their kids”
”I’m not discussing anything with you from here forward. It's far more hassle than it’s worth. Just you saying no to things you have no clue about. “
She has tried - to stay, to fix, to change. She can’t - continue, ignore, or persuade.
She knows she needs to leave and she’s ready to do it. Valentai is going home, back to California, where she will build a better life for her and her children - far away from the racists and sexist remarks that are inevitably absorbed at home.
Your donation can help her get back home and back on her feet. Please help Valentai and her boys go home - away from the insults and abuse that surround her daily.
