Help Us Keep Utila’s Shores Clean — and Keep Ocean Waste Out of the Ocean

Every day, garbage washes up on the shores of Utila, Honduras. Much of it comes from the sea, carried by currents and tides from places far beyond our island.

Utila Island Cleanups is a grassroots, volunteer-powered organization dedicated to permanently removing this garbage from our shores and ensuring it doesn’t find its way back into the ocean.

Our work doesn’t end when the trash is picked up from the beach.

We go the extra mile to make sure it is collected, stored, transported off the island, and properly processed.

Every quarter, we ship the garbage we collect from Utila to a processing facility on the mainland, where it is transformed into an alternative form of fuel. This process keeps the waste out of Utila’s already-stressed dump and, most importantly, helps prevent it from returning to the ocean.

This work is only possible because of the incredible people who show up, get their hands dirty, donate, organize, transport, sort, store, and support us. Our organization operates 100% through volunteers, but keeping this operation running still comes with real costs.
