Hi, my name is Faiz. I am an Australian currently living in Malaysia and recently I came across a place that changed me in ways I never expected. TBQ Amal is a shelter home in Johor Bahru that cares for abandoned, abused and vulnerable children.

The first time I stepped through their doors, something inside me shifted. I met children who should have been thinking about homework and playtime yet they had already lived through more pain than most adults ever will. Despite everything they smiled and they kept trying. Their resilience moved me deeply.

What I Discovered

TBQ Amal is not just a shelter. It is home for more than fifty children who have nowhere else to go. Some were abandoned. Some were abused. Some were left behind with no one else to protect them.

Here, they receive food, clothing, schooling, emotional support and a place where they finally feel safe. Unlike in Australia where foster children receive sufficient government support for their basic needs, children in Malaysia’s shelter homes receive very minimal assistance. Homes like TBQ Amal must rely on NGOs and the kindness of the community just to cover daily essentials. Even so, the caretakers at TBQ Amal give everything they can with love, patience and dedication.

Donating can sometimes feel uncertain. TBQ Amal stood out to me immediately. They are ISO certified. They are audited every year. Every ringgit is accounted for. Their transparency and accountability gave me complete confidence. I saw for myself that donations go directly to the children with nothing wasted.
