A white sheet with black bullet points listing folders, notebooks, crayons, and even classroom essentials like soap and paper towels is a familiar symbol for any child who grew up in the New York City public school system.
While strolling through aisles of colorful stationery is a cherished childhood memory for some, for many families, back-to-school shopping is a source of stress. According to Advocates for Children of New York, at least 146,000 public school students—about one in eight—in NYC experienced housing instability in 2024. For newly arrived immigrant families and others facing economic hardship, even basic school supplies can feel out of reach. The fear of falling behind is real when a child shows up without the tools to learn.
That’s where you come in.
From July 20 to September 14, The Unframed Arts Collective is hosting its third annual Back-to-School Drive. We’re collecting essential school supplies including backpacks, composition notebooks, pencils, folders, crayons, and more for students in need across NYC. Together, we can ensure every child, regardless of their housing status or immigration story, starts the school year with confidence, dignity, and the materials they need to succeed.
Last year, we donated supplies to 40 families. This year, we're doubling our impact: our goal is to support 80 students.
Who We Are
The Unframed Arts Collective is a grassroots organization bringing free, accessible art programs to New Yorkers experiencing housing insecurity. Operating out of the Xavier Mission soup kitchen, we offer creative workshops that foster community, self-expression, and healing. In addition to art, we connect guests with essential social services—including housing support, food assistance, and employment resources—meeting both creative and practical needs with dignity and care.
