It Takes A Village

Is it a good time of year to be asking for money? No. But! It is the worst time of year.

Shaun and I are petitioning the court for custody of Asher's sister, Luna (16 months old). It's messy and complicated, because of course it is. Luna has been with us since she was 7 months old. To say we're all attached is an understatement.

I could write a series on what led us to care for her, but here's the thing that I've learned from sharing stories about our kids: when I tell the whole story, that's all people see when they look at them. And that's not fair. Our kids, like any superhero, are so much more than their origin story. They're so much more than the choices their birth parents have made. What I want you to see when you look at our kids is dedication and love.

There's heartache and struggle for lots of people who have kids. For some, it hasn't happened. Some have loved and lost. Some have endured difficult labor or delivery. Please recognize that our situation is no different, no less personal, and no less complex. These are our labor pains, regardless of it taking place in a courtroom instead of a delivery room. The uncertainty, joy, excitement- it's all there. The venue is just different for us. What we all want is the same thing, and that is a healthy, happy kid.

The money we're asking for will help cover legal fees for this rollercoaster we're on. We have an amazing lawyer, who we appreciate, respect, and enjoy for so many reasons, but representation like that in court doesn't come cheap.

We understand if now is not the time to give financially. Times are tough because of *gestures broadly with both arms*. Thank you for considering, though. It truly does take a village to raise kids and we're happy you're part of ours. ❤️
