THE CUPOLA FUNDRAISING TEAM

Built shortly after the creation of the GCI Ladies Aid Society, the Community Center building, or "The Aid", has been the hub of our community for over 100 years. Other than enlarging the kitchen, the building has remained essentially as it was built...except for the cupola! This simple, elegant, architectural cap to the building was torn down in the 1960s, replaced with a series of leaky skylights and tarps.

Colleen came up with a great idea--Let's bring back the cupola!!

Architect Andrei Pogany from Islesford generously donated his time to draw up the plans, faithfully reproducing the original as closely as possible. We've chosen a skillful Maine craftsman, Bill Ross, to do the construction because we value the building and aim to restore it with care. We'll also repair the building's trim and once it's painted to match the cupola, the Aid will be returned to its former glory.

Our island is growing – this past year three new families with children have moved to GCI year-round. The Community Center continues to be a place where the Ladies Aid Society brings people together for seasonal celebrations, memorable group suppers and our ever-popular annual Fair. The Aid building is a rental venue for large events, hosts Town meetings and serves as the island's shelter in an emergency. It's time to show the building some love!

Our overall Goal is to raise a total of $35,000 to rebuild the cupola and repair and paint the building trim and we got off to a great start, raising $10,000 through the David Bunker Memorial fund and the Community Quilt Project. Thanks to those events and some generous benefactors, we've now reached over half of that goal!

UPDATE: due to final estimates and a couple of changes we have been able to reduce our overall goal to $28,500. So we are reducing the goal here on GoFundme to $6,000.

Now we are reaching out to YOU! the broader community that live here, summer here, visit here, or just love to support small communities, historic buildings, and island life, to help us raise the remaining $6,000.

We hope you will join us in supporting the restoration of the building. It will be a special sight to see the cupola topping the building once again, a symbol of renewal as we emerge from the stress of the last few years and start looking ahead to gathering as a community once again.

We're planning a fantastic cupola celebration over Memorial Day weekend so hopefully we will see many of you there!

Please also share our Facebook posts with your friends and families, as we all know, our island is small but our community is broad and deep!
Thanks.

Our Mission
"The Ladies Aid exists to serve the community by providing a place where any and all can gather for cultural, educational, seasonal celebrations and music. It is also a resource for emergencies in time of need for our residents and visitors."
