In November 2024, my six children and I were overjoyed to receive a new roof through a grant. Our relief was short-lived, though, as the roof immediately began leaking during heavy rain. Water poured into nearly every room—kitchen, living room, bathroom, and bedrooms. Despite giving the contractor multiple chances to fix it, the leaks continued through a very wet spring and summer, leading to ceiling collapses and severe mold growth. I was pregnant with our seventh child at the time, and we spent months catching water in buckets and worrying about our health. Several of us, including myself and the kids, developed health issues that I believe were related to the mold. Our newborn daughter, Charlie, was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis (along with two of my other daughters) and became extremely ill at just two weeks old. The contractor’s insurance denied responsibility, even though we provided extensive documentation—photos, videos, doctor letters, code violations, and demand letters. My own insurance finally stepped in, and a third-party assessment confirmed major water and mold damage. Since early December 2025, we’ve been living in an Airbnb while our house is gutted. We’re still displaced after over a year, and the costs keep adding up. We need financial help to repair the roof properly, complete mold remediation, and replace ruined items like mattresses and personal belongings.
