Dear friends, family, and supporters,
Time flies! We are now going on year 3 of our yearly Summer Camp through Fundación Chispas de Esperanza. Our mission is simple: change lives through the power of sport and education, and I'm a product of this, as a former athlete myself. My sister (Chandra Capozzi) and I (Michael Capozzi) played tennis our entire lives, and our mom (Ada Nuñez) always prioritized us doing sports to make sure we developed healthy habits, beyond our physical health. For us, particularly as we were young, it enabled us to develop a set of skills, tools, and friendships that follow us to this day, in our personal and professional lives. Playing tennis gave us opportunities to truly change our lives, travel the world to compete and represent our country, gain full scholarships at US colleges, and many other incredible blessings. One of these great friendships that tennis gave us - Leyla Cabrera - also joined us in this cause in 2023 alongside many of our family and friends, including a key supporter like Douglas Nassar (my partner) who leads so many things in the camp toe ven begin to describe!
More than 10 years ago, my family and I, alongside friends and collaborators, started a summer camp for disadvantaged children in the Dominican Republic. Now, as a formal non-profit organization, we are bringing back our yearly camp - Cafe con Leche Summer Camp - to benefit more than 120 children from marginalized communities in Santo Domingo. Our vision is to eliminate the broad and entrenched inequities in our communities, to build a more inclusive society, empower disadvantaged children, and create opportunities that help break the cycle of poverty.
The program will include a number of activities to help develop their physical and artistic curiosity and potential:
- Sports & Physical Activities: such as tennis, padel, basketball, volleyball, and yoga
- Art, Music, Dance, and Theater
- Cultural activities, museum visits, etc.
- Closing Community Party & school supplies giveaway
This year, we want to reach 120 kids, as we did in 2024. The estimated cost to support one child is $50 USD ($3,000 pesos dominicanos), and the funds are used entirely for the camp, with no funds being used for team member salaries or operational costs. The funds per child will help cover transportation to sports facilities, sports equipment, art materials, school supplies, cultural trips and activities, breakfast/food/snacks, and many other things.
The camp will be held in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic in July 2025.
Now we are looking for support, be it monetary donations from individuals or companies, or sponsorships. We appreciate your support, and if you want to know more about how to get involved and the needs that require funding, you may contact us directly.
MANY THANKS FOR YOUR SUPPORT!
Michael, Chandra, Ada, Douglas and Leyla
