Miles for Makhanda - Breaking cycles of unemployment in SA!

On 19 April, we’ll be running the Manchester Marathon (!!) 42.2km, which feels both very exciting and slightly daunting, to raise money for a place that means so much to us.

We both grew up in Makhanda, South Africa, and it continues to hold a very special place in our lives. But like many communities across the country, it faces extremely high unemployment, with youth unemployment at over 50%, leaving many young people without clear pathways into work and opportunities after finishing school. Access to employment isn’t just about income; it’s key to independence, stability and long-term opportunity.

That’s why we’re supporting the Assumption Development Centre (ADC).

ADC is a grassroots organisation working to break cycles of unemployment by helping people access further education and start their own businesses. Through training, mentorship and practical support, they are creating real pathways to independence and long-term change in a community that really needs it.

More info about their programmes here: https://adcjoza.co.za/about-us/

Running a marathon is a huge personal challenge for us (especially training throughout a long, dark winter!), but it feels more meaningful knowing it can contribute to a project worthy of every bit of support in the town we come from.

If you’re able to donate, no matter how small, we would be incredibly grateful.

Thank you so much for your support
Gemma and Nicky x
