LEARNING BEGINS WHEN HUNGER ENDS

Did you know?

In the United States, Twenty-two million children* receive free or reduced-price meals through the National School Lunch Program and the National School Breakfast Program.

Approximately 1 in 10 Montanans struggle with hunger, and nearly 37,000 children live in food insecure homes.*

In Bigfork and surrounding areas, approximately 40%* of school-aged children rely on the School Free & Reduced lunch program for breakfast, lunch and snacks.

*These numbers will likely increase as a result of COVID-19.

For many of these children, school meals may be the only meals they eat. What happens when they go home over the weekend?

The “Weekend Backpack Program”

So what is the “Weekend Backpack Program”? This Program provides nutritious, non-perishable, easy-to-prepare food to children to ensure they get enough food on weekends and holidays to avoid hunger when they can’t depend on school meals.

Since October, 2013, the Rotary Club of Bigfork has been raising funds for grades K thru 12 at both Swan River and Bigfork schools to help feed students over the weekends using the “Weekend Backpack Program”.

Bigfork Rotary confidentially receives names of students on the recommendation of teachers and counselors who feel that these students will need food to make it through the weekends. The food items consist of breakfast, lunch, and snacks and are discreetly placed in the students’ backpacks every Friday.

Combating Hunger in Bigfork

During 2019, there were about 90 students from the elementary and high schools in Bigfork and Swan River who participated in the Program, at an annual cost of $18,000, approximately $200 per child. This year, due to the COVID-19 crisis and the resulting circumstances, we anticipate that the number of students in the Program will double.

To meet this increased need, we are asking for your help. Please consider making a donation this year. We have received a generous offer to match all donations (up to a total of $5,000) from local real estate agent, Jennifer Shelley, PureWest Real Estate. We are looking to raise a total of $20,000 (or more) so that we can continue to feed hungry children and families here in Bigfork.

The club anticipates holding more events in the near future to raise additional donations to feed our kids, social-distancing permitting. We would also like to thank the Bigfork Ladies Service Club for partnering with us to help Bigfork and Swan River students.

Thank you for any support you can give us so that we can work towards ending hunger in our community.
