Harrington Mill Pond is a beautiful oasis that has existed for over 170 years. It is home to many species of birds/waterfowl, animals, fish, turtles and other amphibians. Its recreational space has been enjoyed by generations. We need your help to preserve this valuable heritage for future generations! Without your support, this old dam will be history!
Harrington Dam was built in the 1840’s to create a pond and power a grist mill that remained in continuous operation until 1962.
The Harrington & Area Community Association entered into an agreement with the Upper Thames River Conservation Authority in 1997 to maintain the Conservation Area surrounding the dam and grist mill.
The mill was derelict and needed extensive repairs. Volunteers have spent hundreds of hours restoring the structure, with area businesses and individuals generously donating time and materials. Much of the mill’s machinery has been refurbished at no cost to the Association. In fact, the grist mill could now be made fully operational with water from the mill pond.
Unfortunately, the Upper Thames River Conservation Authority has discovered through an Environmental Assessment that the dam falls short of current standards.
Their preference is to remove the dam, and as a result, the mill pond.
The Harrington & Area Community Association believes that if the dam cannot be repaired, it should be replaced.
The Association, in cooperation with the Township of Zorra, has created The Mill Power Fund. A $500,000 Capital Campaign has been launched to raise funds towards the estimated $1 Million cost of replacing the dam and upgrading facilities.
Our goals are to:
-Preserve and protect Harrington Mill Pond
-Protect rare species, natural habitat and unique ecosystem around the pond
-Restore water power to Harrington Grist Mill
-Provide educational programs for children and adults
-Enhance the walking trail and natural habitat around the pond
-Construct public washrooms within the Harrington Conservation Area
-Preserve the home of many animals
The receipt for tax purposes will be issued upon making the donation over $20. Help us preserve this valuable heritage for future generations!
None of the donated funds will be used for administrative costs.
