Please help us reach our goal of raising $11,660 to build a maternal health clinic in Mahowe, Malawi! Malawi, known as “the Warm Heart of Africa”, has one of the highest maternal mortality rates in the world. Mahowe, a village of 10,000 within Malawi's northernmost Chitipa District, makes up only 5% of Chitipa’s population, but accounts for 6 out of every 10 maternal deaths. We have seen firsthand how impactful our past outreach and healthcare initiatives have been throughout Malawi, and we know this project can change the outlook on maternal health in this community for the better.

Expecting mothers in Mahowe currently travel 35 km (21 miles) for maternal health care, requiring them to set aside money for a bicycle taxi or embark early in the morning for the hours-long trek by foot. The brick structure pictured above represents the efforts already contributed by the community members of Mahowe to open up this health center. This step towards our $18,800 total fundraising goal will cover the costs associated with the construction of the clinic's walls, foundation, and roofing, and put plans in motion for the electrical wiring, plumbing, and hospital beds for new and expectant mothers. 

By bringing a local health center to Mahowe, we can expect increases in prenatal care, in-facility birth attendance, and improved maternal health outcomes. The clinic will also offer HIV testing in the hopes of reducing community transmission, and outpatient services for all community members.
