My name is Elizabeth, and I’m a single mom doing everything I can to give my three daughters—Lalibela (15), Elia (13), and Navi (11)—a safe and comfortable home. For the past year and a half, we’ve been living in a fifth wheel trailer. While I’m grateful to have a roof over our heads, the space is incredibly small for four people, especially as my girls grow into teenagers. We don’t have our own personal space, and the constant noise from nearby train tracks means we rarely get any peace and quiet. Our hot water pump often fails, so cold showers have become a regular part of our routine. There isn’t even enough room for us to sit and eat a meal together.

I was counting on a tax refund to help us move into a 2-bedroom, 2-bath apartment that’s much closer to my job, but the IRS is holding the refund and I’m at a loss. Right now, I drive 1.5 hours each way to work, which means less time with my daughters and more time in traffic. This apartment would be a huge step up for us—a real kitchen, more space, and a safer neighborhood. My daughters are incredible: Lalibela is a strong-willed artist, Elia is a joyful dancer and empath, and Navi is passionate about pets and fashion. They deserve a home where they can thrive, have privacy, and just be kids.
