Make a baby McNally

Dear Friends and Family,

They say it takes a village... so please help us make a baby.

We married in January 2016, when Joy was 36 and Ian was 46.  Like many newlywed couples, we were keen to start a family.  For over two years, working around Joy’s global travel work schedule and Ian’s crazy hours launching his company, we did our best to conceive the usual way. Weeks turned into months and months turned into years and nothing happened.  We then solicited the help of the director of fertility services at UC San Diego.  It was (unhelpfully) determined that we have “unexplained infertility.” Our doctor, Dr. Agarwal, prescribed a series of methods to improve our chances at conception: pills (Clomid) plus IUI (intrauterine insemination), and when that was unsuccessful, daily injections (Gonal-F) plus IUI. We tried each these methods multiple times over the course of the past year.  The doctor’s appointments, scans, medications, and IUIs have been stressful for both of us, and not inexpensive.  Each month, our hopes would rise, and then fall when we weren’t successful. Meanwhile, baby bumps grew all around us, friends and family members became parents (some people had multiple children in the time we’ve spent trying to conceive one), and we still had nothing to show for our efforts.

In November 2018, Dr. Agarwal advised us to progress to the next method: IVF.  UC San Diego liaises with Reproductive Partners for IVF, which is convenient for us for two reasons: they are also located on the UCSD campus (i.e. close for us and easy for Joy since she works at UCSD), and Dr. Agarwal will continue to be our primary consulting fertility specialist.  After going through something so intimate with one doctor, it’s somehow reassuring to continue on with the same doctor.  We have completed our initial consultation and learned about the IVF process:  the cocktail of hormones, injections, appointments, egg retrieval—it’s all far more intense than anything we’ve done so far.  However, it’s also much more effective.  We start this process with renewed hope but little money to do it.

From a medical perspective, we should move forward with the IVF straight away (time is of the essence).  However, the price of IVF hit us like a brick wall.  We are not at a point in our lives where we have $36,000 in savings.  We’re spending all the money we have
to get Ian’s business off the ground, feed ourselves, and keep a roof over our head.  We are reaching out to you, our friends, family, and community, to help us manifest this dream.  Our hope is to raise $20,000 through your generous support and to cover the rest of the IVF-related expenses ourselves.

We appreciate your time and consideration and wish you the very best in 2019!

Love,

Ian and Joy
