Logan Was Taken From Us—Please Help Us Fight for Justice

My name is Dean Tipton. I am Logan Tipton’s father.

On December 7, 2015, our family’s life changed forever.

An intruder entered our home here in Versailles and murdered our precious six-year-old son, Logan James Dean Tipton, while he slept. I was violently assaulted, and Logan’s sisters were attacked as well.

There are no words to adequately describe losing a child this way. For more than a decade, our family has lived with the trauma, grief, and unanswered questions left behind that terrible night.

But we have never stopped fighting for Logan.

A Broken System Took Logan From Us — And We Fought Back

During the 2018 trial, the person responsible for Logan’s murder was found not guilty by reason of insanity for Logan’s death, while being found guilty but mentally ill for the assaults against the rest of our family.

Because of the way the law worked, he was scheduled to be released on July 29, 2026, after serving only a portion of a 20-year sentence.

We could not accept that.

For years, Heather and I, together with our children—Koral, Dakota, Aiden, and Lilly—turned our grief into action. We fought to change the law so that another family would not have to experience what happened to ours.

That fight led to something we never could have imagined when we started:

Logan’s Law (House Bill 422) was signed into law in April 2026.

This was an enormous victory. The law addresses serious problems in Kentucky's treatment of violent offenders, including split verdicts in violent crime cases and parole eligibility for certain life sentences.

We fought for Logan.

We fought for other families.

And we won a change that can help protect families in the future.

But Logan's Law could not be applied retroactively to our son's case.

That means our personal fight for justice did not end when the law was passed.

The Fight Is Not Over

Our family is still living with the consequences of what happened to Logan.

The nightmares haven't stopped. The grief hasn't stopped. The fear and uncertainty haven't stopped.

And neither has our determination.

We have retained attorneys and are pursuing every lawful legal avenue available to us, including legal challenges and other remedies, as we continue fighting for accountability and working to protect our family and community.

But this fight comes at a tremendous financial cost.

Attorney fees, legal expenses, administrative costs, and the continued work required to advocate for change have placed an enormous burden on our family.

We have given everything we can.

Logan was an absolute angel on earth.

He was six years old—a little boy who loved people unconditionally and had a beautiful, selfless heart. His love reminded us of the love of Jesus.

Logan should have grown up.

He should have experienced birthdays, graduations, friendships, first jobs, and a lifetime of moments with his family.

Instead, we were forced to bury our little boy.

We cannot bring Logan back.

But we can make sure that his life mattered, his story is heard, and his legacy continues to make a difference.

We are tired.

We are hurting.
