Hey Friends & Fam,
I'm writing on behalf of my kind, caring and courageous younger sister.
She works as an ER nurse at a large hospital in Los Angeles and on any given day she sees and cares for folks who are at their worst. She does so with strength, empathy and grace. If you know her, you know that these qualities are innate and extend to her personal relationships as well.
At the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, my sister was working 3-5 twelve hour night shifts per week. As an essential worker, she witnessed an incredible amount of suffering and death. She experienced the loss of colleagues and friends and whenever she was asked how she was doing she would simply answer, "I'm here. 10 fingers, 10 toes" I was astonished by her calm in the face of a storm, and thankfully she made it through the worst of the pandemic.
Two months ago, my sister experienced a traumatic event while caring for a patient. As a result, she was unable to work. During this time, she sought support from her workplace to offset her inability to cope with said trauma and the costs incurred.
As is often the case with black women in the health care system, her pain was deemed insufficient for support and she was not listened to. We hear of this time and again with patients and now this pattern is playing itself out in the life of a black female medical professional.
Despite all of this, and out of necessity, she returned to work and on her very first shift back she experienced another violent traumatic event and will not be returning to work in the foreseeable future.
I saw firsthand the toll that being gaslit and unsupported by an institution that she had selflessly devoted herself to took on her. I'm hoping you can help to make sure that she doesn't have to experience that a second time.
My intention is that whatever funds are raised will give her the time to heal and recover without added financial stress.
She would never ask for help herself, this is not in her nature but as someone who loves her, I'm asking YOU to help ME.
Please share and donate what you can.
Much Love.
