TLDR: Cancer stole my uterus and having a baby without one is expensive.

We are coming up on celebrating our 4th wedding anniversary, and what a wild ride it has been!

Almost 2 years ago I started grad school and went to a doctor’s appointment that would soon change everything. A month later I was diagnosed with Uterine Sarcoma. This is a rare cancer in general, and even more rare for someone my age.

In order to fight this cancer I underwent a full hysterectomy. Prior to this procedure we were able to do one round of egg retrieval and create embryos. We had good success, but now we are trying to figure out how to get them here.

Since I no longer have a uterus, our path to fertility involves utilizing a gestational carrier. Today we are excited to announce we finally got the medical clearance to try and have my mother-in-law Jessie carry our baby. We have been working on this process and jumping through hoops since September.

Unfortunately, even with such a gracious offer, this is still a very expensive process. We are currently facing a lot of expenses. Due to the high grade of my cancer I have expensive scans every three months. (Currently showing no evidence of disease!) The surrogacy route includes fees for psych evaluations, legal fees, all the normal IVF costs and then the expense of actually delivering a baby.

Asking for help is not a strong suit of mine, but I know we have a family that is anxious to get here. I don’t have the ability to do that on my own.
