Help Us Get The Skate Scholarship on the Road!
Back in 2021, The Skate Scholarship started with one simple idea: make roller skating accessible to everyone.
We began by running free roller skating sessions across the city, focusing on communities with high levels of deprivation, where young people often don't get the same opportunities to take part in sport or try something new. We ran these sessions for free every week.
Fast forward five years, and we've grown into a Community Interest Company. We're still proudly volunteer-led (although we're now sometimes able to pay our amazing coaches!), and alongside our free sessions we now run skating lessons, refurbish and donate second-hand skates and equipment, and organise Northern Roll – one of the UK's biggest roller skating festivals.
At the heart of everything we do is the same mission we've always had: helping young people, making roller skating more accessible, and bringing skating to places that might otherwise never get the chance.
But there's one thing that's really holding us back...
For the last five years we've hauled hundreds of pairs of skates, protective equipment, ramps, speakers and everything else we need in our own cars, on buses, in taxis, and with a lot of determination. It worked when we were small, but we've outgrown it.
These days we're regularly running two or three community sessions every week, often in different parts of the city, and we desperately need a van.
A van would mean we can:
Reach more young people in more communities.
Run more free sessions where they're needed most.
Transport equipment safely and efficiently.
Spend less time juggling logistics and more time doing what we love.
Keep growing without burning out our volunteers.
Every donation, no matter how big or small, gets us one step closer to reaching more young people.
If you've ever skated with us, borrowed a pair of our skates, volunteered, cheered us on, or simply believe every young person deserves the chance to discover a sport they love, we'd be so grateful for your support.
Whatever we raise we will look to match fund with other funding sources.
