Free Our Feeds | A campaign to keep social media open, people-powered, and billionaire-proof
Social media is broken – controlled by a handful of billionaires who shape what billions of people see, say, and believe.
Platforms profit from division, extract user data, and lock people into closed systems.
We believe there’s a better way – and a rare opportunity to build it.
Free Our Feeds is an initiative to create a vibrant, open social media ecosystem free from billionaire control.
Bluesky’s underlying tech – the AT Protocol – is one of the most promising foundations for a new kind of social web: one where we all have more say, choice, and control.
Free Our Feeds will establish a new, independent foundation to secure the future of social media with independent infrastructure and an ecosystem of innovation and applications on top of open technology.
With the first $100k raised we:
- Are funding IndieSky, a project by the ATProto Community Fund that supports infrastructure R&D, developer grants, and common tooling for independent social infrastructure
- Have appointed Ivan Sigal as Free Our Feeds Interim Director. We are delighted that Ivan, former executive director of Global Voices, has joined to bring dedicated leadership to Free Our Feeds. He brings deep expertise in media, tech, human rights and civic networks
Our fundraising targets:
- We have an initial target of $500k to cover core activities for a year. This will include further investment in IndieSky and a common moderation infrastructure that reduces the barrier to compliance for small teams
- We have a medium term target of $4m to set up the foundation and substantially increase infrastructure investment, as well as developer support
- We have a longer term target of $30m to support the development of fully independent infrastructure and social web apps that can serve tens, if not hundreds, of millions of people
Governance:
Free Our Feeds is overseen by a group of nine custodians, who have approval authority over major governance decisions, including final approval of the foundation's leadership and setup, and distribution of funds to the foundation when it is established.
The project is under the fiscal sponsorship of Exchange Point Institute, a US-based 501(c)(3), who will hold any funds raised from the crowdfunder on behalf of Free Our Feeds.
