Hello friends,
We are Sara and Bruno, proud parents of two beautiful little boys Noah and Ari. Noah is going to turn 4 in February and Ari will be 2 months old soon. We are here because like so many millions of people around the world we have been deeply affected by the impact that the covid-19 pandemic measures had in the world.
In January 2020 we decided to change our lives. After living through all the instability and uncertainty society has to offer, we decided to make a change in having a more sustainable and debt free lifestyle.
In 2017, right around the time our first son was born, we started a business in hospitality. We started our business and immediately started facing the cruel reality of the world, being young and naive we put our trust in people and very quickly got stabbed in the back. Less than one year into our business we got robbed. Basically we rented out an apartment in Lisbon to make a small bed and breakfast. We made a contract in which we had to pay one year in advance of rent for the apartment, and we did, and before the year was over we got a visit from a lady with court order saying we had to leave the house because the rent wasn’t being payed for sometime. So basically what happened is that the landlord was renting that house from another landlord and he wasn’t paying the rent to the actual owner of the house. The landlord that with which we signed the contract with new that he was being evicted, in consequence us, and never at any time informed us, so it was a huge 'surprise'. The actual owner of the house, was a Chinese business man that lives in China, had no pity on us and we had to leave the apartment. We lost all the money from the rent that we has payed in advance and also quite a lot of money we had spent remodelling the place. We had a pretty rough start. We hired a lawyer to sue the guy but just ended up spending a lot of money and were faced with the disappointing reality that justice in this country doesn’t work at all! Still we kept going. With a lot of debt already we rented out 3 new apartments for the same bed and breakfast purpose. Things were going pretty well, although in winter season we could barely pay the bills of the business and we still didn’t manage to pay anything that we owed, but still managed to get by which was considered good already.
Through out those years, I was personally becoming extremely disappointed with the system and really scared that at any time something bad could happen. With no warning we could loose everything again and I would have no means to take care of myself, Bruno and my only 1 son at the time. Going online I started to get inspired with families from all over the world that had changed their lives, into a more debt free and sustainable lifestyle. I got so inspired that I too wanted to create something that could inspire other young families and people in general as well. Immediately I had the goal to show people, through the way I create my place, that luxury and quality of life, means so much more than what we think and are taught in society. With a lot of effort we managed to get an old Rv, and were lucky enough, that my parents had a land were we could park it, although the land has no access to water or electricity.
So in January 2020, we left everything, but still mantained our business active, and moved out into the land. We started out living in a tent, while we where remodelling the Rv, and thats when we found out I was pregnant. That winter was a terrible one, we had almost no guests and we could barely buy food for ourselves. We were crossing our fingers and hoping we could make it to March, that's when usually we would start getting more guests. We where also heavily depending on the money we would earn that summer season for transitioning into our new life. We were aiming on getting some solar power, water, to finish remodelling the Rv and the outdoor house attachment area for the kids, all that before the baby was born. Which would have been totally possible if things hadn't changed so drastically.
But Boom the Covid-19 stroke in March and it was like a gunshot to the heart! Very quickly we lost everything, as we had no financial capacity of maintaining those apartments, paying rent and bills with no guests. So there we were, with no money, no business, having to pay a brutal amount of IRS, soon to be parents of a second child, in a land in the middle of nowhere, with no electricity, no water pump to take out water from the land, with a unfinished home and deeply concern emotional state. I was so stressed I started suffering from tachycardia, I couldn’t eat so I got anaemic too, it was a pretty agonising pregnancy.
Our families helped as they could but they too were financially affected by this pandemic. Bruno had to declare bankruptcy, but is still waiting to make it oficial by the court of law, it usually means that anything he earns the government will take away to make up for what he owes.
Thank fully our baby was born safely but with all the stress and fear for our future, my breastmilk didn’t come through so we have to buy formula all the time.
I know we have a long way to go as we don’t even have the basics of water and electricity. We also have still plenty of work to get done in the Rv and out in the deck were we are making a little house attachment so our kids can have extra room space. We really want to install a fireplace, as we have plenty of wood to collect from the land, heating would be free this way. A fridge would also mean the world, in the summer temperatures can go above 30 degrees which makes life with no fridge hard, specially with 2 kids.
