Help us find answers after the Bédar fire

On 9 July 2026, fifteen people died in the Los Gallardos–Bédar wildfire in Almería, Spain. We are their families and friends.

They were our parents, our partners, our brothers and sisters, our neighbours. Most had come from other countries and had chosen this corner of Spain as their home. Two months on, we still do not know why they died.

What we know, and what we don't

No ES-Alert message was sent to phones in the area. Officials have said residents were warned. Our relatives were not reached.

Two separate groups of people, each made up of several families, were trapped by the flames independently of each other. When that happens twice in one evening, it cannot be explained by individual decisions alone. Something in the system failed.

This was the deadliest wildfire in Spain this century. Yet it burned around 5,200 hectares and led to some 1,600 evacuations. One week later, a fire near Madrid burned 27,000 hectares, with over 55,000 people evacuated or confined, and nobody died. Why was Bédar different?

What we are doing

Families of the victims have joined the judicial investigation as private prosecutors under Spanish law. This gives us the right to request evidence, ask for investigative steps, and bring in independent experts on how the fire behaved, how warnings were issued, and how the evacuation was managed.

We are not asking anyone to decide who was responsible. We are asking for the chance to find out what happened.

What the money is for

Taking part in a complex investigation costs money: lawyers and court representation, independent fire and emergency experts, expert reports, translation, and travel to hearings. Depending on how far the case goes, the full process is likely to cost far more, but our first goal is €100,000: enough to secure legal representation and commission the first independent expert reports.

Every euro will go to documented costs of the case. Nothing goes to the families as compensation or personal support. If money is left when the proceedings end, it will be donated to organisations working on wildfire prevention and emergency preparedness.

Why it matters beyond us

If prevention, warnings, evacuation or emergency response failed in Bédar, the same failures can cost lives in the next community a wildfire reaches. Finding out what went wrong is the only way to fix it.

How you can help

Donate if you can. If you can't, share this page with one person who hasn't seen it: a friend, a community group, a journalist.

Fifteen people died on 9 July. We can't change that. We can find out why.

Eran nuestros padres y madres, nuestras parejas, nuestros hermanos, nuestros vecinos.

A nuestros familiares no llegó nadie.
