Hi, I’m Julius Kirumira founder of the African Institute for Animal Welfare. Last year, while filming our documentary at a slaughterhouse in Uganda, our team locked eyes with a black pig, she was pregnant and she was terrified.
We will never forget the fear in her eyes. We stood there, watching her be handled in the cruelest way we had ever seen and we could do nothing. We had no power to stop it. She was slaughtered and her unborn piglets with her.
That moment is why this campaign exists.
Since then, our documentary https://youtu.be/7Uv0jkN82Lk?si=-uFBJTonU5yr9ypf has shifted the public conversation around farmed animal welfare in Uganda.
We have engaged key stakeholders and we have filed a case in court to push for legal enforcement of humane treatment for pigs and other farmed animals. It is bold, it is historic and it is working.
Now comes the most important phase: reaching the farmers themselves. They shape how these animals are treated every day and this is where lasting change happens.
We are raising funds to:
1) Train over 250 pig farmers across Uganda in humane handling, transport and slaughter practices.
2) Bring evidence from the field into our court case, turning real stories of cruelty into legal pressure for reform.
3) Open a national conversation about a more compassionate food system in Uganda.
4) Create training materials in local languages that will keep teaching long after the funds are spent.
We have the public's attention, the legal pressure and the momentum. With your help, we can turn this moment into permanent change for millions of animals so that no pig has to look into a stranger's eyes in fear ever again.
Every donation, big or small, brings us closer to a kinder world.
