My grandson George is in severe heart failure, yet his biggest wish is to help other children like him enjoy precious seaside holidays with their families.

My name is Nicola and I am the proud grandma of George.

For many years I have been involved in charity work supporting children with heart conditions and their families. I previously served as a trustee of a children’s heart charity, where I personally helped raise over £35,000as well as supporting and fundraising for many other charities and families in need.

Helping others has always been something very close to my heart.

But this mission has now become even more personal.

My grandson George is currently in severe heart failure. He is an incredibly brave young boy who lives with complex medical needs. George is ventilated on life support every night, takes over 10 medications, has a pacemaker, a tracheostomy, and is tube fed.

In the next few weeks he is scheduled to undergo further heart surgery and stomach surgery, and he has recently had to start blood thinners.

Despite everything he faces, George still thinks about helping other children like him.

When George was younger, a wonderful charity offered subsidised caravan holidays for families of children with heart conditions. These breaks meant everything to families who often feel isolated and overwhelmed by hospital appointments, medical equipment, and the daily reality of caring for a very poorly child.

Sadly, that charity is no longer active.

George asked me one simple question:

“Grandma, could we help children like me have holidays again?”

And that is how G’s Getaways was born.

Our aim is to provide seaside caravan breaks for families of children with serious heart conditions and complex medical needs, including children who rely on ventilators, tracheostomies, feeding pumps, and other life-support equipment.

These families often cannot take normal holidays. Packing medical equipment alone can be overwhelming, and many parents rarely get a chance to relax or make happy memories together.

I previously managed the caravan bookings for another charity for two years. During that time I saw first-hand how much these breaks meant. Sometimes I was the only person families spoke to all week booking their break because caring for a medically complex child can be incredibly isolating.

Our goal is to start with one caravan at Haven Golden Sands, and once established hopefully add a second caravan, so we can help even more families while keeping the charity small and personal.

We already have some funds that will cover the first year’s running costs and cleaning so this fundraiser is to help us purchase the first caravan.

We would love to get this up and running for this summer, so families can start benefiting as soon as possible.
