After five years of working on the ground in Kenya, I’ve made some huge decisions — I am now running independently, having registered as a Scottish Charity! I’m thrilled (and incredibly proud) to introduce Ubuntu Africa.
Our mission is simple but powerful: empower communities, transform futures. The concept of Ubuntu is rooted in the belief that we are all connected — “I am, because you are.” It’s about standing with your community, recognising that our lives are inseparable from our relationships with others.
Having worked closely with the people of Ngando, it is undeniable that investment in the community is vital to maximise the impact of the work we already do with the children in school. This can only go so far if a child goes home to a poorly paid, unmotivated parent in a situation with no opportunities to break out of the poverty cycle. There are so many incredible people in Ngando with undeniable skills, talents and abilities with nowhere to channel them. This is where the vision of Ubuntu Africa comes in. The charity's main goal is to build and run a school for the children but also have a community centre for adults where they can come to learn new skills in an environment that provides a 'Safe Haven' for all.
Right now, we are supporting the most vulnerable families within the Ngando community who simply cannot reliably feed their families, struggle to put clothes on their children's backs and are unable to make ends meet at home, let alone afford additional costs like schooling or medical fees. The school will continue to serve the children and staff we already support with meals, education and emergency aid, but with the vision to do so much more for so many more people! Among other things our community hub will provide food for those families who cannot put their next meal on the table, act as a workshop host for parents and community members who want to learn new skills and gain new opportunities, a public meeting space for churches and women's empowerment groups, grant access to computers and technology they otherwise would never see, all on a means based system meaning no one is excluded or forced to go without and everything is available to the most underprivileged and disadvantaged families.
Here’s where we need you: We are urgently raising funds to turn this vision into reality. Construction of our new school and community hub in Ngando is scheduled to begin in November 2025, but we must secure the remaining funds to ensure we can open in time for the new school term in January 2026. The cost to build the school is approximately £6,500. We then need to furnish classrooms with desks, chairs, blackboards, and stationery, as well as equip our kitchen and library — bringing our total target to £10,000. We are appealing to all supporters: past, present, and new to stand with us and help take this project to the next level.
Every contribution matters, and no donation is too small.
By investing in this project, you are investing directly in the people of Ngando. There is no middleman — every penny goes straight to providing education, meals, and opportunities for the children and their families. We are committed to keeping you updated at every stage as we see this build through to completion.
