Help us build a Street Children Protection Center

Jambo Families and Friends,

I am Lukas, I am currently volunteering at HEKIMA, a local NGO in Tanzania. We are combatting children and youth on the streets in Bukoba. We want to protect them and transform them to live a better future.

We provide first aid, psychological support, access to education, and protection for the children and youth living on the streets in Bukoba. At our daycare canter children can wash themselves, play, learn, receive free food, and have a safe place to rest. We furthermore offer workshops and training courses to give the youth skills that they can apply in the future. All activities offered are centered on HEKIMA’s main goal, to reunify the street children with their families and in case it is not possible to find alternative care.

Nevertheless, family reunification is a process that takes time to address the underlying issues. During this period, it remains crucial to provide children and teenagers with a safe place to sleep and the possibility to experience childhood. We have observed that when children return to the streets each night, the reunification process is slowed. Additionally, they are exposed to violence, abuse, and exploitation. Furthermore, their health deteriorates due to prolonged exposure to environmental factors.

This has prompted HEKIMA to start building, in addition to the day center, a center that can care for the street children day and night during the process of reunification. This new center is dedicated to safeguarding and nurturing children in a secure environment where they can prepare for reunification with their families or alternative care. They will be equipped with fundamental life skills and entrepreneurship training for future challenges. Being at the center will allow them to break free of street life and the violence that comes with it.
