Help Us Build a Safe Walk-In Shower

I never imagined I’d be in a position to write something like this, but here I am — asking for a little help to make a big change in my life and my husband Mike’s. I’ve been using a motorized chair for over five years now, initially due to severe Achilles issues. In the past two years, things have become even more challenging after being diagnosed with osteoarthritis in both knees and my lower back. It’s made mobility increasingly difficult, especially when it comes to something as basic — and essential — as taking a shower.

A couple years ago, we tried to adapt by cutting into the side of our old cast iron tub just to make it easier for me to step in. But now, even that’s becoming too painful and unsafe. I use a shower chair and can’t stand for long, and our current setup doesn’t have grab bars which adds more strain to every shower. After years of searching and receiving high quotes, I finally found a contractor who can convert our tub/shower into a 42-inch walk-in shower with grab bars and a handheld shower head. It’s the most affordable and realistic option I’ve seen, and it would make such a difference in our daily lives.

To be honest, I’ve been sitting on this for a while. I don’t usually share personal struggles online, and it’s very difficult for me to ask for help. But I’ve realized that sometimes, we all need a little support to get through tough times. My husband has been unemployed for a year and recently dealt with health issues of his own. A walk-in shower would help him too, and bring both of us more safety, independence, and dignity in our daily routines.
