This is written by Valerie Palmatier my Brother Jon's Daughter of their Little Iron Man,
Noah Jayce Walker, born on November 16,
2018 went to urgent care and emergency
room on August 8, 2021 for diarrhea and
vomiting. Doctors said it was a stomach virus and that the virus would pass. Not satisfied On August 9,2021 I took Noah to a different
emergency room (Loma Linda Children’s hospital) and they admitted him to figure out what was going on. They did ultrasounds, x-rays,
and blood work. Noah’s blood work showed
that his hemoglobin and platelets were
decreasing and his lab work showed an acute
injury to his kidney. Labs also showed zero
infections but diagnosed Noah with Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS). The following day
Noah needed a platelet transfusion and that
night on August 10, 2021 the doctor called
Rapid and Pediatric ICU took Noah to their
department. By August 11,2021 Noah was
heavily sedated, with multiple IVs, catheter,
ventilator and needing plasmapheresis that
night. The following day on August 12 Noah
began continuous dialysis but his body
continued to fail. Kidney failure, both of his
lungs collapsed and heart failed on August 13 and needed his life saved. Doctors performed ECMO as the last hope for survival for Noah. Noah made it through the surgery and was on ECMO for 9 days. While on ECMO he needed a bronchoscopy to help open up one of his
lungs and then his other lung opened by itself. On August 22 Noah came off of ECMO
because his heart starting pumping again and his lungs were open and working. A couple
days after ECMO Noah got extubated (got off of the ventilator)
He went through so much throughout this time including blood transfusions, platelet
transfusions, and needed his plasma
exchanged for good plasma. Noah also
contracted Covid the day he was placed on
ECMO.
Once Noah was taken off of ECMO they were able to do an MRI and that’s where they saw a few blood clots scattered throughout the brain and a brain bleed. After Noah surviving
everything he now is healing from a stroke.
Throughout the rest of Noah’s hospital stay he ended up getting off of continuous dialysis
and placed onto hemodialysis for about a
week and then got completely off of dialysis
because his kidneys started functioning again. Then Noah neeeed an ng tube placed in his
nose because he would not stop throwing up (withdrawal from medications). Once he was
no longer throwing up he had a g tube
surgery because he could no longer eat on his own and needs to be fed through a feeding
tube.
We were finally discharged from the hospital October 7, 2021 where Noah got to come
home with only a feeding pump because he
was able to heal the rest of his organs. Noah’s brain is still healing, he is fully dependent on
me to be his arms, legs, and voice.
We are trying to get help to fund a building of a bathroom that can help me accommodate
his daily care. Anything that is given is so appreciated.
Thank you
