My name is Ashlynn Salvador. I’ve been battling a high-conflict family matter for about 5-6 years now as a Pro-Se. Pro-Se is when an individual chooses to represent themselves in these types of court matters. It’s been a roller coaster of a ride all these years, both in and out of court.

Representing yourself is definitely not an easy responsibility to take on. Studying family laws and rules, drafting and filing documents, and showing up in that courtroom to litigate against seasoned Attorneys, Custody Evaluators, Advocates and the other parent, may or may not be the best for you or for your case.

I give respect to those who represent themselves without being able to afford an attorney. It takes bravery, courage, and commitment to be able to stand on your own.

October of this year took a turn for me and my family. My Family Court Case unraveled to its most serious stage as it’s ever been in the last 5 years. When I say fear, anxiety, and feeling helpless hit me all at once, I feel like my entire world is flipped upside down and for the first time in 5 years, I found myself drowning in fees and documents that were so foreign to me and the only thing that I could decipher of it all, is that my child would be removed from me and I’d have no contact with her at all.

This was just the beginning of a true nightmare that I wanted to be woke from.

In this moment is when I realized that I needed to hire a professional and an Attorney.

The journey of calling law offices on Big Island and O’ahu was definitely not easy. Thank God that one of many law offices contacted, I got one YES.

In the blink of an eye, paralegal fees, expert witness fees, Guardian Ad Litem fees, and Attorney fees totaled up very quickly.

My retainer alone for the Attorney is $20K. This does not include hiring my own expert witness which can cost anywhere from $8K-$10K. Paralegal retainer of $5K and a GAL for my daughter that can cost anywhere from $5K-$8K.

Those of you who know me, I am not one to ask for help. I always try to take care of my business on my own, but this time, I reach out to the community, friends, and family who have been supporting us, showering us with love, and blessing us with prayers!
