We are in the process of adopting Baby Theo, a sweet newborn with Down syndrome who is currently in the NICU. Our journey to this moment has been unexpected but feels absolutely right. Originally, we were going to mentor another couple through Theo’s adoption, but when they realized the complexities involved, they decided to step back. The adoption agency reached out to us, knowing our experience as special needs parents and my background in nursing school. We’ve wanted to grow our family for a while, and when the agency made an exception to work with us again, it felt like everything fell into place.

Theo has a significant heart condition that will require open heart surgery, but his doctors are optimistic that he’ll be able to live a relatively normal life after his recovery. He is already so loved by the nurses in the NICU, and we can’t wait to bring him home. Because this adoption is happening so suddenly, we haven’t had time to save up for the costs involved. We’re facing adoption fees, travel expenses for an extended hospital stay, and the added challenge of traveling to Chicago for Theo’s surgeries at the same hospital where our first son received wonderful care.

We are ready to give Theo all the love, care, and therapy he’ll need, but we don’t want financial worries to distract us from focusing on his health and our family’s transition.
