Family, friends, and community, I am reaching out to you today with a heavy heart, but a clear mission: I am fighting for the life and future of my 11-year-old son, Tyrone. Tyrone is currently facing legal challenges that no child his age should have to carry. He is being charged with two counts (3rd and 4th degree), and as his parent, I am terrified of him getting lost in a system that was not built to protect him. We all know the statistics and the reality of being a young African American boy in the court system. At just 11 years old, Tyrone has his entire life ahead of him. He deserves the chance to learn from his mistakes, to grow, and to thrive—not to be defined by a legal file or swallowed up by a system designed to work against him.

Up until now, we have been reliant on a court-appointed attorney. After receiving only one voicemail and then being told the attorney would be unavailable until just two days before our next court date, it became painfully clear that Tyrone’s life is being treated as an afterthought. We cannot leave his future to chance or to a system that is already playing games with his life. I have found a dedicated private lawyer who is willing to take Tyrone’s case and give him the real defense he deserves. However, the starting legal fees are significant.
