Anyone who knows our brother Jason (and his wife Lisa) knows that when someone needs help, they are usually one of the first people to step up.

Jason is a dedicated high school math teacher who has also spent years coaching football and giving his time to his students, athletes, family, and community. He and his wife are raising five children, and throughout their lives they have always found a way to make things work without asking much from anyone else.

Today, we’re asking for them.

Our nephew, Trexton, was born with spastic quadriplegic cerebral palsy. He is nonverbal and unable to walk or independently move his wheelchair, so he relies completely on his family and caregivers for his mobility and transportation.

As Trexton has grown, something that was once difficult has become increasingly impractical and unsafe. Getting him in and out of a standard vehicle requires physically transferring him while also transporting and managing his specialized wheelchair separately.

His family has reached the point where they truly need a vehicle that allows Trexton to remain safely in his wheelchair while traveling.

For most of us, getting into a car and going somewhere is something we rarely have to think about. For Trexton and his family, it requires planning, lifting, transferring, and a tremendous amount of physical effort every single time.

A wheelchair-accessible van would change that.

It would give Trexton safer and easier transportation to school, medical appointments, family activities, community events, and all the ordinary places a family needs to go.

We’ve spent time researching wheelchair-accessible vehicles and trying to find the most practical and financially responsible solution. A new professionally converted wheelchair van can easily cost $60,000–$90,000 or more. Rather than purchasing a brand-new vehicle, we found a reliable, lower-mileage, pre-owned van that has already been professionally converted for wheelchair accessibility.

Because Trexton sits approximately 54 inches tall in his specialized wheelchair, the vehicle needs sufficient clearance along with a lowered floor, rear-entry wheelchair ramp, and proper wheelchair and passenger restraint systems. His family also travels frequently, so finding a dependable vehicle with reasonable mileage is especially important.

Our goal is to raise $33,000.

The funds raised will go toward purchasing the safest and most reliable pre-owned wheelchair-accessible van we can find, along with applicable taxes, registration, inspection, and any necessary initial maintenance or accessibility-equipment servicing.

We’re not looking for the newest or fanciest vehicle. We’re simply trying to give Trexton and his family something most of us take for granted:

A safe, dependable way to get where they need to go.

Jason has spent much of his life showing up for other people. Now we’re hoping we can come together and show up for him, Trexton, and their entire family.
