Did you know that Marin is home to over 80 foster youth? Or that 4,000 teens age out of California's foster care system each year? In fact, many of these young people are placed outside of the county due to a lack of available foster families and services. For those who remain or return, support is often limited, particularly as they age out of the system and face life on their own.
My name is Ruby Cole, and I’m a rising senior at Marin Academy in San Rafael and a Life Scout with Troop 1015 in San Anselmo. I’m currently working toward earning the rank of Eagle Scout as part of the 4th class of young women to do so in Scouting America (formerly Boy Scouts of America).
For my Eagle Scout project, I’m partnering with the Marin Foster Care Association (MFCA) to improve the outdoor area of one of their transitional housing sites in Novato. This apartment complex serves youth who have recently aged out of the foster care system—many of whom are navigating their first steps into adulthood.
I have been volunteering with Marin Foster Care for many years now, and am so excited and honored to be working with them for this project!
Fun fact: In California, about 1 in 3 youth who age out of foster care experience homelessness by age 21. Supportive environments—like this one—can make a meaningful difference.
My goal is to transform the outdoor space into a welcoming and functional community area where residents can relax, gather, and build a sense of connection. The improvements will include seating, landscaping, and pathways, turning a neglected space into one that feels cared for and shared.
To make this project a reality, I hope to raise $4,000 to cover the cost of materials and supplies. I will be leading a team of volunteers to complete the renovation on August 23rd and 24th. Any funds raised beyond my goal will be donated directly to the Marin Foster Care Association.
If you would prefer to donate directly to MFCA, I’ve included a link here: https://secure.lglforms.com/form_engine/s/bKfhEvaeXfCfCGvmyEO4rQ
In addition to financial support, material donations are also welcome! I am specifically looking for: lumber, plants and greenery, gravel, redwood chips, picnic benches and lawn furniture, and tools.
If you’re able to contribute materials or have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me.
Thank you so much for your support!
