Did you know that some dying or abandoned villages throughout Europe are given a new life by migrants?
Probably not, because the media is full of negative stories about immigration. But, across Europe, there are inspiring projects of migrants bringing new life to villages that were on the edge of disappearing. Newcomers find a home, and in turn, these villages rediscover their heartbeat—schools stay open, shops can thrive again, and communities grow stronger.
I am keen to make these inspiring stories known. Also, I want to make all useful information available to others.
A different story of migration—one of hope, rural revival, community, and second chances needs to be heard!
Why do I need your help?
Many of these initiatives started over a decade ago. But today, little is known about how they are doing. Are they succeeding? What can we learn from them?
I want to visit example villages in Spain, France, and Italy to:
1. Spend some time to listen to and share the voices of newcomers, long-time villagers, and local leaders.
2. Collect insights from the people who started these projects, identify what works (and what doesn’t) and create a knowledge base that can help shape future policies and solutions.
This is time consuming and costs money. At the moment there are no funds that fit this project. That’s why I started this crowdfunding. Together we can fund it.
What will I deliver?
I will publish blogs, stories, and research on my website free for everyone who wants to understand a different side of migration.
Also, I will publish stories on other platforms and share them on social media for a broader public to read.
And, I will put together a database for policymakers with more detailed knowledge about the projects.

Who am I?
Living abroad I am myself a migrant, a migrant with a Dutch passport having lived in Spain for over thirteen years. Interested in living in another place again I have travelled a lot through Europe. And that’s easy for me. For people fleeing from their homes outside of Europe, for example in the Middle East, Africa or Asia it is not.
During my travels in search for a new place to live I have seen a lot of semi abandoned villages in rural Spain. I always thought how nice it would be to give refugees the opportunity to start a new life here because I had heard about the village of Riace in Italy where the major started such a project.
Doing some research I found out that several such projects exist throughout Europe! That’s where my idea comes from. My heart wants to do something, tell a different story. Stories about opening doors instead of building walls. In search of opportunities instead of only seeing problems and obstacles. Out of love and understanding instead of out of fear.

¿Me ayudas? En la investigación independiente sobre la migración como movimiento positivo en la revitalización/recuperación rural de pueblos en zonas abandonadas de Europa.
¿Sabías que algunos pueblos abandonados de Europa están recuperando la vida gracias a las personas migrantes?
Probablemente no, porque los medios suelen centrarse en historias negativas sobre la migración. Sin embargo, en toda Europa existen proyectos inspiradores donde las personas recién llegadas dan nueva vida a pueblos que estaban a punto de desaparecer. Los nuevos habitantes encuentran un nuevo hogar, en muchas ocasiones un hogar seguro y sin amenazas y, a su vez, esos pueblos redescubren su latido: las escuelas siguen abiertas, las tiendas vuelven a funcionar, los campos se llenan de trabajo y las comunidades se fortalecen.
Por esta razón, quiero dedicar mi tiempo a dar a conocer estas historias inspiradoras y a poner a disposición de todos y todas y a las comunidades la información útil que surja de ellas.
Es hora de escuchar una historia diferente sobre la migración: una historia de esperanza, comunidad y segundas oportunidades.
¿Por qué necesito tu ayuda?
Muchas de estas iniciativas empezaron hace más de una década, pero hoy se sabe poco sobre su evolución. ¿Funcionan? ¿Qué aportan a nuestras comunidades? ¿Por qué podemos considerarlas beneficiosas? ¿Qué podemos aprender de ellas? En esto se basa mi investigación, en conocer y mostrar la importancia de la llegada de tantas personas que buscan un nuevo hogar.
Quiero visitar pueblos de España, Francia e Italia para:
1. Escuchar y compartir las voces de las personas recién llegadas, del vecindario, los vecinos de siempre y de líderes locales.
2. Recoger las experiencias de quienes impulsaron estos proyectos, identificar qué funciona (y qué no) y crear una base de conocimiento útil para el futuro.
Todo esto requiere tiempo y recursos. Actualmente no existen fondos que se ajusten a este proyecto. Por eso he iniciado esta campaña de crowdfunding. Juntos podemos hacerlo posible.
¿Qué ofreceré a cambio?
Publicaré blogs, artículos e investigaciones en mi página web —de acceso libre para todo el mundo— y también en otras plataformas y redes sociales para llegar a un público más amplio.
Además, crearé una base de datos para responsables políticos dentro de la política con información más detallada sobre los proyectos.

Sobre mi
Al vivir en el extranjero, yo misma soy migrante. Aunque una migrante con pasaporte neerlandés que vive en España desde hace ya 13 años. Con interés en volver a vivir en otro lugar, he viajado mucho por Europa. Y para mí eso es fácil. Para las personas que se ven obligadas a huir de sus hogares fuera de Europa —por ejemplo en Oriente Medio, África o Asia— no lo es.
Durante mis viajes en busca de un nuevo lugar, vi muchos pueblos semiabandonados en la España rural. Siempre pensé lo bonito que sería dar a las personas refugiadas la oportunidad de empezar una nueva vida aquí, porque había oído hablar del pueblo de Riace, en Italia, donde el alcalde puso en marcha un proyecto así.
Al investigar un poco más, descubrí que existen varios proyectos de este tipo en toda Europa. De ahí nace mi idea. Mi corazón quiere hacer algo, contar una historia diferente. Historias de abrir puertas en lugar de construir muros. De buscar oportunidades en vez de ver solo problemas y obstáculos. De actuar desde el amor y la comprensión, en lugar del miedo.
