Cara is an 11 year old girl who has a lust for life and demands to be independent as possible, much like any other little girl! Unfortunately Cara was born with severe quadriplegic cerebral palsy that affects all her limbs. Cara is unable to crawl, sit, stand or walk unaided. Because of this Cara is non-mobile, and relies on caregivers for most daily tasks. She is a very intelligent girl though and misses nothing! Cara has always wanted to explore her environment by herself like any other child, and although I was able to buy her an electric wheelchair a few years ago due to the overwhelming kindness, generosity and support of family, friends and the local community through a gofundme campaign, the next obstacle on her journey to independence was a lack of suitable wheelchair accommodation to meet Cara's complex needs as she and I were living in a two bed terraced house which was in no way wheelchair accessible. We were stuck for 11 years as standard wheelchair accommodation is only built for disabled adults and not disabled children and their families. This was so frustrating as I'm sure any of us could try to imagine if we couldn't get about by ourselves, and having to be carried up and downstairs to our bedroom for 11 years!
HOWEVER, WE HAVE FINALLY JUST MOVED INTO A WHEELCHAIR FLAT THAT WAS DESIGNED AND PURPOSE BUILT FOR THE WEE BOSS TO BE HER FOREVER HOME!!!
The difference already to Cara's independence and self esteem has been immeasurable!! But of course, there's a but lol....as it's totally new, the floors are bare concrete and the walls bare plaster and as such are dangerous and unhealthy for the wee boss to live in, and funds so far have had to go towards essential furniture and appliances as we were in a furnished private rental previously and are starting from scratch.
If anyone could give anything at all to help it would be amazing!
