Car Help for 911 Call Taker

I’m raising money to help TJ get a car. This is really an important car because TJ needs it to get to her job where she answers emergency 911 calls from you or me or anyone else in our community when we need help.

I know something about this job, and what TJ particularly brings to it, because my daughter works with TJ, and she greatly appreciates the presence of TJ at a really hard job. 911 call-takers have a lot of burnout and a high turnover rate due to the stress and often times trauma of the job. People call 911 for anything from a stubbed toe to situations more awful than many of us can even imagine. The people who answer these calls work hard to get you help as fast as possible, to be a calm presence with you in the midst of your crisis, and to always be respectful even when those of us in our community curse at them, sometimes brutally and loudly, while they are simply still trying help us.

I also know just how hard it can be to get around Charlotte, just to get your groceries or meet other needs— let alone get to work— if you don’t have a car, or if you don’t live and work in just the right spot with access to easy public transportation. TJ is working overtime (literally extra hours) for our community trying to get a car instead of being able to come home, unwind, walk her dog, and rejuvenate some before going back to work to be available on a 911 call when we need someone to help.

TJ’s situation is that she had a car and was making her regular payments just fine. But then the car needed a $9k repair with $15k still owed, and the math no longer worked. She is currently auctioning the car off. She will then still have significant debt on a car that she no longer even has, and she will still be struggling to get to work.

I hope you can pitch in and help us get TJ’s debt cleared and at least a good down payment for a new car, so it is a bit easier for her to keep showing up for all of us when we need her. The person who answers our 911 calls should not have to struggle so much to get to work— so I hope we can all help!
