Help this young man trapped in abuse family situation

My name is Juanita Pérez, and I am the aunt and legal guardian of Jacobo Pérez, an 18-year-old young man with an impeccable record as a student, volunteer, and community member. Today, I am asking for help to defend him from an unjust domestic violence accusation that could send him to prison for six months, despite him being the real victim of physical and psychological abuse from his moms boyfriend.

When I attempted to file charges against his agresor , both the police and NJ court officials told me that I couldn’t do so because Jacobo is legally an adult ( just 3 weeks ago was his birthday) and doesn’t live at the same address as me. This is despite the fact that:

• Jacobo was physically assaulted and is traumatized.

• My sister finally admitted that her boyfriend has been abusing her for years.

• Jacobo has never had any legal or behavioral issues before this incident.
