Fundraiser for Kat, organized by Aleks Marigodova
Baby Aleksandr was born on January 26, 2022 in the city of Kharkiv, Ukraine. Back then, it was impossible to imagine that one month after his birth, Aleksandr’s family would be forced to live in a bomb shelter while their city is being destroyed along with their dreams and hopes of a normal life. For the sake of her kids, Aleksandr’s mom Katia Matveeva has made a tough decision to flee the city of Kharkiv with her newborn and a seven year old child, leaving her husband behind to defend their beloved country. To reach safe ground at faraway boarder with Poland she must travel more than 800 miles by any means of transportation she can find. Kat is my daughter’s godmother, my best friend and my family. Little Aleksandr is my precious godson. Kat needs help to save her little ones while providing them with shelter, food, transportation and lawyer fees. A word from Kat
February 24, 2022. Kharkiv, Ukraine I woke up to sound explosions. Running from window to window, I tried to understand where the sounds were coming from. It was dark outside and I saw the sky on fire. Half an hour later, I learned that this was was from the news. Later we learned how to live in bomb shelters, dark, wet , freezing cold rooms full of people, paralyzed with fear. Soon, we forgot what it’s like to wake up in our own beds, learned to go to sleep fully clothed and remain constantly alert for the soundtrack of sirens, ready to run to the nearest shelter or basement. At first, like in psychology textbooks, there was panic, despair, rage, denial and depression. After that, for a while I lived with acceptance of death ringing in my ears. But the closer it came to us, I started to realize I need to continue running, save my babies no matter what.
