Early one Monday morning in May, Lucia* and her husband Diego* left home for a doctor’s appointment. Lucia was pregnant with the couples’ first child, due in July. On their way home, they planned to stop at a local restaurant to celebrate another healthy check-up for the baby. But they never made it to lunch.

ICE agents stopped Diego and Lucia and handcuffed them both on the street. After some time, they abducted Diego and left Lucia alone, instructing her to sit in the back of the truck and not move. Terrified, she did as she was told. When the agents left, Lucia was alone. She was 7-months pregnant and doesn’t drive.

Thankfully, some bystanders helped Lucia get back home. ICE put Diego into detention and within two weeks he was deported to Guatemala.

Diego had been living here and working as a house painter for 14 years. Lucia has been here for 7 years. The two are from the same small village in Guatemala, but they met here and have built a life together by working hard.

The couple was happily preparing for the arrival of their first baby, a girl. Diego painted her nursery pink and was in the process of creating a mural on the wall beside the crib—a beautiful scene, highlighting the expected baby’s name, *Sol.

Now Lucia is preparing for birth and motherhood alone, without Diego’s loving presence and support. She is due in just a few weeks. And with the loss of Diego’s income, she is struggling to support herself and pay her expenses (rent, food, transportation), as well as supplies she needs for the baby.

Una mañana temprano de un lunes de mayo, Lucía* y su marido Diego* salieron de casa para acudir a una cita con el médico. Lucía estaba embarazada del primer hijo de la pareja, cuyo nacimiento estaba previsto para julio. De vuelta a casa, tenían pensado parar en un restaurante de la localidad para celebrar que el bebé había salido bien en otra revisión médica. Pero nunca llegaron a almorzar.

Agentes del ICE detuvieron a Diego y a Lucía y los esposaron a ambos en la calle. Al cabo de un rato, se llevaron a Diego y dejaron sola a Lucía, ordenándola que se sentara en la parte trasera de la camioneta y no se moviera. Aterrorizada, hizo lo que le dijeron. Cuando los agentes se marcharon, Lucía se quedó sola. Estaba embarazada de siete meses y no sabe conducir.

Afortunadamente, algunos transeúntes ayudaron a Lucía a volver a casa. El ICE detuvo a Diego y, en menos de dos semanas, fue deportado a Guatemala.

Diego llevaba 14 años viviendo aquí y trabajando como pintor de casas. Lucía lleva aquí 7 años. Los dos son del mismo pequeño pueblo de Guatemala, pero se conocieron aquí y se han creado una vida juntos trabajando duro.

La pareja se preparaba felizmente para la llegada de su primer bebé, una niña. Diego pintó su habitación de rosa y estaba creando un mural en la pared junto a la cuna: una hermosa escena en la que destacaba el nombre de la futura bebé, *Sol.

Ahora Lucía se está preparando para el parto y la maternidad sola, sin la presencia cariñosa ni el apoyo de Diego. Le queda solo unas semanas para dar a luz. Y, al haber perdido los ingresos de Diego, le cuesta mucho mantenerse y pagar sus gastos (alquiler, comida, transporte), así como los artículos que necesita para el bebé.
