We are raising funds to obtain a vending permit from StreetsLA for each of the 6 vendadoras of Mar Vista Gardens who have been organizing with LATU. Each permit is $291. All additional funds will go to providing umbrellas for shade for the vendors while they work.

ABOUT THE VENDADORAS:

Street vending is the soul of Mar Vista Gardens (MVG).

For over 40 years street vending has been a backbone of the MVG community, providing needed resources to residents such as clothing and home supplies, as well as funding other community resources such as escuelitas that provide free daycare to many children in MVG.

The 6 vendadoras that LATU has been working with have been organizing as part of Power for years. They started this latest project with LATU after they were threatened with eviction notices for vending on the premises. They have already proven themselves to a dedicated organizing force.

BACKGROUND:

A few months ago you all helps us send 100s of emails to HACLA asking them to stop harassing tenants at MVG including the vendadoras who are especially vulnerable as women, elders, indigenous people, widows, and working-class tenants.

Your emails were heard and Eric Brown of HACLA has promised that they would be allowed to vend around MVG 2x per month so long as they have proper permits.

LATU and the organizers of MVG have already worked together to help each vendor file for 2 of the 3 permits she needs in order to vend in Los Angeles. However, the last permit has not yet been obtained because it will cost $291 per vendor ($1746 total). Mike Bonin's office promised to pay but later said that he could not. Now we are raising funds so that these women can legally vend in order to support their community and themselves.

ABOUT MAR VISTA GARDENS:

Mar Vista Gardens is one of the last surviving public housing projects in Los Angeles. The latest agency plan from HACLA has stated that it will be privatized within 5 years if we do not fight. The vendadoras as the heart and soul of MVG are essential to this fight as their networks will make it possible to build the broad colation of resident support needed to stop privatization.
