The team in Morocco needs help during Covid-19

As you most likely already know, since 2015 I have owned two guesthouses in Morocco and work with my business partner, Mokhtar, a tour operator, to plan trips for guests visiting the whole of Morocco.

There are many amazing people with whom I work at the riads, people who have become like family; I know their families and they know about mine. We work together to bring our guests the best possible experience when they visit Marrakech. Our goal is to have clients learn about Moroccan culture through these people; to feel a connection to another part of the world through them.

The main industry in Morocco is tourism. Without it during the pandemic, the team has no income except a very small allowance from the government.  Fortunately, the government is also taking care of the monthly health care insurance and social security for each employee, so they’re not losing out on that. But their pittance salary provided is not enough on which to live.

We are thankful that a few former guests have reached out to offer assistance during these past six months and they’re who gave me this idea to start a GoFund Me page to officially help out.

The goal is $2, 000 and I hope to split that between 7 employees. If we receive more, each employee will gratefully get more money.

Something to keep in mind before donating: borders in Morocco remain closed to foreigners until 10 September, at which time conditions will be re-evaluated. But we’re not expecting things to return to even close to normal conditions until well into 2021.
