A Community Space for Creativity, Education, and Opportunity

The Ruth L. Holley Design Studio exists because creativity changes lives. For years, I have dedicated my work to helping young people and emerging creators in Buffalo access the resources, instruction, and encouragement they need to explore fashion, design, and the arts. What began as a commitment to teaching sewing and garment construction has grown into a community-centered creative lab built on community, education, access, and continuity.

At The Ruth, students of all ages learn technical design skills, build confidence, and discover new ways to express themselves. We host sewing workshops, youth programs, photography and styling classes, portfolio development sessions, and community arts opportunities. All of this work is rooted in the belief that access should never be a barrier to creativity. As a teaching artist and lecturer in the Fashion and Textile Technology Department at Buffalo State University, I bring the same care and intention to my studio that I bring to the classroom, ensuring young people have spaces where they feel supported, challenged, and inspired.

This work is deeply meaningful, but maintaining and growing a studio like this requires resources. Your contribution directly supports:

• Youth program supplies including fabric, tools, and creative materials
• Studio rent and utilities to keep the space open and accessible
• Scholarship seats for students who cannot afford workshop costs
• Repairs and upgrades to sewing machines and essential equipment
• Program development that expands what the studio can offer to the community

$15 — basic sewing tools like needles, thread, and notions
$25 — fabric and materials for youth workshops
$50 — a free workshop seat for a student in need
$100 — supports studio rent and keeps our doors open to the community
$250 — one month of youth program materials
$500 — upgrades or repairs to classroom equipment
$1,000 — sponsors a full session for a group of young creators

We are raising $7,500 to sustain the studio through the spring cycle and strengthen our foundation for the upcoming summer youth programs. Your support helps ensure that Buffalo’s emerging designers and creators have a place where they can learn, imagine, and be seen.
