Help The Rolling Library Build Free Libraries

The Rolling Library is a free mobile book fair. We provide no-cost books and literacy-focused events to the New York City community. Our books are sourced from donations and always free, whether it's at a pop-up book fair in the local park or a children's storytime hour on the open streets.

As The Rolling Library heads into the winter months, which makes it harder to do our outdoor book fairs, we’ve been looking for safe, alternate ways for our program to continue. One thing we’d like to do is set up Little Free Libraries  at the nearby NYCHA housing developments: Astoria Houses, Ravenswood Houses, Queensbridge Houses (North and South), and Woodside Houses. We’d like to buy the unfinished houses, have local artists paint them, and then set them up with books so members of the community can pop by anytime to take or leave a free book.

In order to do this, we’re trying to raise $2,300.

Cost breakdown:
5 Two-Story Little Free Libraries : $1,649.75
5 posts for the libraries: $399.75
Shipping: $136.75

The remaining $113.75 will go toward any extra materials (such as painting and installation supplies) and anything left over will go toward buying books written by Black women.

The Rolling Library is a passion project and the two of us pay for the majority of our expenses—storage space, shelving, supplies, etc.—out of pocket or with help from generous friends. We'd appreciate any help—no amount is too small!—to help us continue to provide free books to the community. We'd love to keep this project going and, hopefully, continue to install Little Free Libraries around the city in the future. Thank you!
