Help The Lighthouse Fuel the Front Lines

Over the last few months the entire world has careened into a new and unexpected reality. A global issue is impacting our local communities on a scale that none of us were prepared for, yet our communities are galvanizing into action on an equally unprecedented scale. In our new world, the private sector is stepping up en masse to provide where the state cannot. Small, struggling businesses are becoming conduits for public support for front line workers and restoring lost jobs in the process.
The Lighthouse Cuisine & Kitchen is an Austin-based small business joining this historic movement by partnering with local healthcare centers. Their goal is to provide 2,500 meals to hospital staff through the end of April. To do this they'll need to raise $10k. By donating to this fundraiser you're not just helping a small business, its employees and their families; you're also giving back to thousands of hospital staff as they strive to care for all of us.

Nurses, doctors, technicians, and janitorial, clerical, and pharmacy staff; these are just a few of the many people showing up to do difficult jobs every day, often risking their own health and the health of their families. Their sacrifice and dedication serve as a source of hope during these uncertain times, and these meals are just a small token of our enormous gratitude.
All donations to this fundraiser go toward providing meals to local hospitals. In order to reach our goal of 2,500 meals we need to raise $10,000. Each meal comes out to ~ $4 which covers the cost of the food, prep, and pay for necessary employees.

The Lighthouse Cuisine & Kitchen is a local food services business, born out of chef & owner Phillip Toney’s love for food that is simultaneously delicious and healthy. In 2013, after struggling with his own health and experiencing the life-changing impact proper nutrition can have, Phillip made it his mission to share his passion for eating well. What began as a smoothie bar quickly evolved into The Lighthouse Cuisine & Kitchen; a successful small business offering healthy meal box plans, catering services, as well as fresh smoothies and juices.
For the last 8 years, The Lighthouse staff has remained committed to serving nutrient-rich meals, improving the health and well-being of their community, and bringing a little more love and joy into everyday lives through food. They launched their own program called Love and Affordable Meal Plans (LAMPs) to “pay it forward” by helping feed those in need. Now, as our community confronts the myriad challenges stemming from COVID-19, Phillip and his team are using LAMPs to provide meals for people fighting tirelessly on the front lines, as well as the more vulnerable populations facing food insecurity.

I hear you and I’m right there with you. We recognize that The Lighthouse is not the first or only business to launch this type of campaign. Small businesses everywhere are finding ways to take care of their employees and communities that often rely on the generosity of others. We are among them, and want to stand in solidarity with them. At the end of the day we truly appreciate our fellow Austinites doing whatever they can to help—and encourage everyone to donate to fundraisers benefiting their own communities too.
We also recognize that many people are not in the position to give. But for those who are, keep in mind no donation is too small for us or any of these fundraisers. Every dollar counts.
Let’s give that last statement some color (because “every dollar counts” is vague and trite) using easy numbers (because, well, math). Say you commit to donating just $1 to different businesses and relief efforts every week for 8 weeks. As an individual you’re only spending $8 over the course of 2 months. There are about 1.2 million people living in Travis county. If just one quarter of the population donates $1 every week for 8 weeks, when all is said and done we’ll have put an additional $2.4 million back into the local economy. If one third of the population donates, we'll have put 3.2 million back after 8 weeks...you get the picture. While a couple million might be a small percentage of what the county is losing overall, it's still something.

If you can, spread the love, and take care of yourselves as well. We’re all going to be in this for a while. As of this writing, there are over 590 confirmed cases in Travis County and the numbers are only going up. So help with whatever you can whenever you can, conserve resources without hoarding, stay safe and practice social distancing, and remember that the potential of those working collectively to achieve goals will always be infinitely greater than the potential of any individual pursuit. Together, we can nourish and fuel those individuals we depend on, who are working around the clock away from their families, and often without time between shifts to do everyday things such as go to the grocery store or make food for themselves. Together, we can show our appreciation for all of our loved ones, friends, and neighbors who are out there keeping our communities safe amidst this pandemic.
