Our Story

Meet Shameka Joiner, a hardworking 41-year-old mother and dedicated sous chef from Memphis, Tennessee. Shameka has always believed in doing things the right way - pulling herself up through hard work and perseverance. But right now, she needs our community’s support.

The Challenge

Life recently dealt the Joiner family a difficult blow when Shameka’s husband lost his job. Now, Shameka is working full-time in the demanding world of professional kitchens while simultaneously caring for her precious 3-year-old son and 4-year-old daughter - all without family support nearby.

As any parent knows, balancing a full-time career with raising young children is incredibly challenging under the best circumstances. Doing it alone while managing the financial stress of a single income makes each day a marathon of strength and determination.

Shameka has been like family to me since the day she was born. I met her when I was working as a social worker, and I’ve had the privilege of watching her grow into the amazing woman, mother, and professional she is today. As her godmother, Janice Vandehar, I’ve seen firsthand how Shameka has consistently chosen the path of hard work and integrity.

Born and raised in Memphis, Shameka has deep roots in our community. She’s the kind of person who gives her all - whether it’s creating beautiful dishes in the kitchen or nurturing her children with love and dedication. She’s not asking for a handout; she’s simply going through a rough patch that many families face.
