Katie is a Columbia native and Hickman graduate. She taught kindergarten and first grade in Columbia Public schools for 12 years.
After giving birth to Henry and Ellie, her second and third children, in December 2014. She was diagnosed with Stage 2 breast cancer in August 2015. After completing six rounds of chemotherapy, surgical removal of the remaining tumor and radiation, all by the end of 2015, she returned to a somewhat normal life.
The Hanneys moved to a larger house in April of 2017 and shortly after, Ellie was diagnosed with ependymoma, a type of brain cancer. Ellie survived multiple surgeries that May, but required the insertion of a tracheostomy and GI tube. After four months in the pediatric ICU at Women’s and Children’s Hospital and three rounds of chemotherapy, Ellie was transferred to Children’s Hospital in St. Louis where she underwent proton beam radiation therapy at Siteman Cancer Center. Ellie was finally able to return home after radiation and rehab in March 2018.
Unfortunately, the troubles didn’t end there. A routine MRI in November revealed Ellie had a recurrence of ependymoma in a different part of her brain. Another surgery and another couple of months of radiation in St. Louis was required to clear the tumor. She’s currently cancer free but requires overnight nursing care and lots of therapy.
Then in Mary 2019, Katie had a bone scan show her cancer had metastasized in her right pelvic bone. This news was especially devastating since it meant that, despite over three years of being cancer free, Katie would have to deal with cancer for the rest of her life. She has recently completed another six rounds of chemotherapy and will continue hormone therapy indefinitely to help prevent the cancer from returning.
Their needs right now are financial, if you are able to help this wonderful family please do. They will be forever thankful.
