Our crazy year, Recapped and continued: (I don’t recall precisely what I’ve shared so far). The end is not really in sight, but is taking a more definitive trajectory.
Thank you for all the prayers, shoulders, volunteers, and council.
Your time and effort are appreciated.
Late 2023 we were able to purchase our dream house.
When I say dream house I’m not talking “a house that fits our dreams”. This is the land I grew up on, the house was my late grandparents who we loved dearly. It has the solitude, the creek, the memories.
Months later Christina had a heart attack. She received some stints and we hoped the worse was behind us. Then, six months later she had another heart attack.
This is odd for our age so we reached out to more Doctors and experts in various disciplines both inside and outside our insurance.
A picture was forming suggesting that Her allergies which had been a complicating factor in her cardiac treatment, may also be contributing more than we thought. They may in fact have indirectly contributed to the heart attacks themselves.
She was diagnose with something called MCAS. Her system reacts to an increasing list of allergens which inflamed and put undo load on other systems including cardio.
A consensus of the various doctors suggested that a primary cause could be mold. So we ordered a basic test.
Our house is not old but has had a few leaks that had allowed hidden mold to grow in the walls, carpet and ceiling over time. The result of the test was alarmingly high.
The consensus was “Get Out Now!”
Not only that but “Take Nothing with you”. Furniture, appliances and belongings are all contaminated. Unless it is non- porous, has simple shapes that can be thoroughly cleaned at every surface or can be soaked. it is forfeit. Those items with sentimental value will be stored until careful inspection / remediation measures can be taken.
Immediately, We became sorta homeless, bouncing between B/Bs, a tent in the yard, and hotels for weeks. We even tried to make a Hooverville like shelter in the barn (that leaked). Finally we decided to rent another house. Thankfully, Since leaving her health has improved significantly.
After getting an in depth evaluation we learned the remediation, and repairs needed are extensive, worse the success rate for this is about 50/50.
We have pursued any avenue we could think to fix it all, considered desperate scenarios, and sought a lot of council.
Between medical expenses, housing, and countless related cost We have cashed out, and maxed out deeply. Additionally, Because the damage was done years before we owned it insurance is not an option.
Sadly there is no viable path for keeping the house. Especially considering the 50/50 odds.
We have reluctantly contacted a realtor and are discussing the logistics of selling.
Worse case scenario we short sale it which is bad but better than a foreclosure. Best case, we can recover what we owe, what we have put into it and what we lost to some degree.
This is a 1000 foot view. There are so many reasons, complications and considerations which will take pages to explain.
This is among the hardest thing I’ve dealt with, about the hardest I can imagine that does not require a funeral. That my family is alive and increasingly well is of great consolation.
Please continue to remember us in prayer.
